名詞所有格一般表示所有關係。有‘s 所有格和 of 所有格兩種。所有格和雙重所有格的區別有：

（1）有時 of 所有格與雙重所有格在單句中意義較接近，知識側重點有所不同。

He is a friend of my father’s。 =He is one of my father’s friends。 （著重說明父親不止他一個朋友）

He is a friend of my father。 =It is he who is my father’s friend。 （著重說明他是我父親唯一的一個朋友）

（2）中心詞是 portrait， picture， printing， photograph 等詞時，後面用 of 所有格指某人自己的肖像、照片等；用雙重所有格則表示某人所收藏的肖像、照 片。

This is a picture of my father。 照片上的人是我父親。

This is a picture of my father’s。 這照片屬於我父親收藏。

（3）談到主人和客人的關係時，代表主人的所有格名詞後的house通常省略。

I had a lovely evening at Peter and Helen‘s （house）。 我在彼得和海倫家過了一個愉快的夜晚。

注意，以下的house不能省略，因為句子中沒有表示主人和客人的關係：My uncle’s house is at the foot of the hill。 我叔叔的家在山腳下。
