Exile，流放，這個詞在這首歌裡指的是流放於一段舊戀情之外。

如果說每首成功的分手情歌都有其恰如其分的情景，對於Exile這首歌來說，它最符合的，就是同居的戀人準備分手時，一個人打包好了行李準備走的那一刻，突然感覺自己像是從此就流放於這一片疆土，再無歸處。

Taylor說：

Exile是一首關於戀情裡的溝通問題的歌曲，在這首歌裡，我幻想著他們因為溝通不良結束了這段戀情，在兩人告別之時，他們仍無法好好溝通。一直以來，一直到現在這一刻，他們雙方都不同頻。即使到了故事末尾，即使他們已經分手，他們仍不傾聽對方的聲音。

所以我們想，歌曲的開頭應該是男方角度的故事，第二段主歌會是女方的故事，結尾則會是他們互相爭辯，絲毫不聽對方說了什麼。我們非常想知道最後會怎麼發展，因為這首歌真的很像是兩個人的悲劇，像是兩艘船在夜裡相遇（碰撞）的悲劇。
