今天的片段來自美劇《明日傳奇》（Legend of Tomorrow）。

這是一部科幻電視劇，主角團每集都會穿越到不同時代，解決不同的問題。

這一段裡，有一句大家經常聽到的話Hang in there，這句話的意思是“堅持住”。

但是想必大家都看到過那種小貓吊在半空中的圖吧？

這張圖其實就是運用了hang in there的雙關開的玩笑。一方面整句話的意思是“堅持住”，一方面又用了hang的“懸掛、吊”的意思。

英語中類似的冷笑話還有不少。

比如：

Are you cold？ Go sit in the corner， it’s 90 degree。 是不是冷了？到角落待著去，那裡90度呢。

這句當然就是用的degree的兩個含義，雖然都是“度”但此“度”非彼“度”。而且要注意的是，這裡的90度是美國人常用的華氏，差不多相當於攝氏32度，確實夠熱的了。

My friend’s bakery burned down last night。 Now his business is toast。 我朋友的麵包店昨晚被燒了，這下他的生意完蛋了。

這裡用的toast的雙重含義，一個醫生是和麵包店相關的“吐司”，一個意思則是“完蛋了”。

I don’t trust stairs， because they’re always up to something。 我不信任樓梯，因為它們總在策劃什麼，

這裡用的是up to something的雙重含義，和樓梯有關係的意思是“往上通到向東西”，另一個意思則是“秘密謀劃某事”。

Wouldn’t it be ironic to die in the living room？ 死在客廳會不會很諷刺？

這裡用的是living room的雙關，字面來看是“活著的房間”，但實際意思是“客廳”。

I’m close friends with 25 letters of the alphabet， I don’t know y。 我和25個字母都是好朋友，但我不認識y/我也不知道為什麼。

讀出來就發現是用了y的讀音，聽起來好像why。

Why did the blind man fall down the well？ Because he couldn’t see that well。 那個盲人為什麼會跌到井裡？因為他看不清。

這裡是well的雙重含義，可以當副詞形容see，也可以當名詞是“井”的意思。

What’s the king of all school supplies？ The Ruler。 文具裡的王是什麼？尺

尺ruler還有一重含義即“統治者”。

What did the letter say to the stamp？ Stick with me and you’ll go places。 信對郵票說了什麼？跟著我一起就能飛起。

stick with somebody的意思是“跟著某人”，stick本身還有“粘、貼”的意思，因為郵票是被貼到信上的嘛。go places字面上看是“去各種地方”，但其含義更多是“（在某一領域）獲得成功”。

Someone said my clothes looked gay today。 I told them my clothes came out of the closet this morning。 有人說我今天的衣服有點gay，我跟他們說我衣服今早剛出櫃。

大家都知道，出櫃come out of the closet是特定用語，但字面意思就是從櫃子裡出來，衣服當然是要從衣櫃裡出來啦。

Change is hard。 Ever tried to bend a coin？ 改變是很難的/零錢是很硬的，試過折彎一枚硬幣嗎？

這裡用的是change的兩個意思，“變化”和“零錢”。

Singing in the shower is all fun and games until you get shampoo in your mouth。 Then it becomes a soap opera。 洗澡的時候常規很有意思，但等嘴巴里進了洗髮水，那麼就變成了肥皂劇。

soap opera，“肥皂劇”，但從字面來看，也可以理解成“肥皂歌劇”。

When I found out my toaster wasn’t waterproof， I was shocked。 我發現我的麵包機不防水的是時候，真是震驚了。

shocked可以是“震驚”，也可以是“被電”。

這種笑話其實都有一個共同點，即運用了一詞多意，puns，是不是很有意思？

【例句】Arming the police doesn‘t deter crime。

僅僅靠給警察配備武器是無法制止犯罪的。

【短語】under arms處於戰備狀態

【短語】be up in arms about sth。極力反對；強烈抗議某事

（2）分支機構；部門

【例句】Millicom Holdings is the British arm of an American company。

米雷康姆控股有限公司是一家美國公司在英國的分支機構。

4、still a.&v.&adv.

a。（1）靜止的；不動的

【例句】Gladys was still， then she shook her head slowly。

格拉迪絲一動不動，然後慢慢地搖了搖頭。

（2） （飲料）不含碳酸氣的，不冒泡的

（3）寧靜的；寂靜的

【例句】In the room it was very still。房間裡十分寧靜
